Social Work in Central Asia

The objective of the course is to:

  • Explain the historical context, development, and common challenges of social work across Central Asia.
  • Explore the evolution of social work and the current situation in this area in Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Tajikistan.

This course is designed to provide the historical context, development, current state, and common challenges of social work across the region of Central Asia. The course is based on the SOLID project book publication entitled Drug Cultures and Policy in Germany, Central Asia, and China. The Role of Social Work in the Development of Prevention and Treatment of Drug Use Disorders (by I.I. Michels, H. Stover and D.Deimel).

This course can be completed in 1-3 hours. It features two modules: "Introduction to Social Work in Central Asia" and "Social Work in the Penitentiary System." Each module includes readings and videos, followed by a short quiz to assess your understanding.

Upon completion of the course, you will:

  • Understand the historical development and current state of social work in Central Asia.
  • Identify common challenges faced by social workers in Central Asian countries and suggest potential solutions.
  • Recognise key focus areas of social work across the region, including child protection, disability services, and rehabilitation programmes.
  • Understand the role of social work within prison settings in Central Asia, with a focus on inmate rehabilitation and reintegration.
  • Analyse the unique challenges faced by prison social workers, such as overcrowding, limited resources, and a lack of specialised training for the prison system.
